Question:
When we bought our Dutchmen camper the dealer installed in a rooftop air
conditioner as part of the deal. We have owned the camper for about three
years and have had to replace the lift cable twice. The lift cable has
recently broken and I'm about to replace the for the third time. I'm trying
to find out if I can install a stronger cable or should I just take the air
conditioner off. I contacted a couple of dealers and was told that the
regular factory cable is all that's available. On the other hand may be the
air
conditioner isn't the problem at all. Is there a possibility that some
other problem is to blame for the broken lift cables.
Answer:
-Maybe your cable is routed in such a way that it rubs something all the
time.Or rests agains a sharp edge somewhere and while towing that edge is
slowly cutting on the cable.
-Have had a Coleman pop up for a year with a rather heavy AC on it. Cables had
to be replaced but because they were too short!! This resulted in tearing the
canvas out of its channel.
Shroud on AC cracked and was replaced. I has cracked again. I have since found
out that when the trailer is pulled with a chev Astro van or other high vech.
the wind pattern changes and causes the shroud to vibrate and crack.
Try to contact the dealer directly, to see if another cable (stronger) but same
diam. could be used.
