Question:
alaskan/alcan truck campers? I think it might have been here on this newsgroup that I recently saw a
message about the Alaskan/Alcan truck campers--I checked out their website
just now and would be interested in hearing from anyone who owns one or
knows about them.
I'm someone who would like to camp/rv in National Parks/BLM areas, as well
as eventually travel to areas in the West and Canada (for maybe 2 to 3
months at a time) that are fairly off the beaten track--so that's why I
think the Alaskan/Alcan product would fit my needs. If not that, perhaps
the Sportsmobile 4X4.
Answer:
-I don't know a thing about the camper, BUT I do know you will just
love it out here, if you like to get off the beaten track. Most places
around here the BLM land and Nat'l Forrest do not require you to camp
in the campgrounds. So find a spot near a creek, lake or whatever and
you will be in heaven. Further, if you have an old dirt bike
(motorcycle) bring it along for some of the best back country trail
riding known to man. You can ride to 7000 ft to bike campgrounds only,
if you like. There are logging roads to take you just about anywhere
you want to camp. Many lakes rarely see people just because people go
to campgrounds and nowhere else. If you come to the Pacific Northwest,
be sure to bring your sense af adventure.
-My wife and I looked into the both of these. The factory
owned web sights are very slick as is the printed material.
But our in depth research proved to serve us well. We had
many of the need you mentioned. Going out back.
I spoke to a Alaska owner who spoke about a leaky lift
system and poor construction in the same area. They had
heard the new owner has tryed to better this flaw in the
design. The lift does look weak. Top price too
Sportsmobile is also a top priced rig. It is a very expensive ride.
We looked over a van and found older model (+8yr) not to hold up.
I wish I had visited one of the factories but we found the high price
was a deterrant. We found "ours" 92 Minne Warrior before we dove
in. One funny thing. The "comment" section of the SM brochure listed
a fellow living in or area. -- He couldn't believe it he had a camper
but not a sportsmobile.
