Question:
I am getting ready to go ATV camping to some remote spots. I have been
backpacking in the Rocky Mountains in my younger years, and carried 35-40# for
a three day trek. Now the weight limit for my ATV is about 200# of gear, so I
can carry most anything I want. It seems like overkill.
Questions:
How many people here ATV camp?
Do you use the pricey rack carriers available from suppliers, or milk crates
and containers?
What do you take?
What is most important on your list?
I guess the basics are obvious: tent, sleeping bag, small stove, food, water,
clothes, utensils, and all the usual stuff. (First aid kit, tools, flashlight,
cell phone, small tarp, GPS, tow rope, etc.......)
Anyone who does this seriously is welcome to post back to me, or e mail me. I
realize that a lot of people here have the go-fast rockets and are not into the
old fart slow thing. But I was just wondering how many do it. Also any links
to groups or information would be appreciated.
I go to some awesome remote spots around Southern Nevada, Southern Utah, and
Northern Arizona, and am really looking forward to this new way to access the
remote places without the 4wd truck. I want to create a site, and post some
pics of my travels to share. The open country and isolation around here is
awesome.
Answer:
-I take delivery of my first quad tomorrow. (2002 Polaris Sportsman 500) I
plan to have in the bed of my truck whenever I go camping with my trailer.
However, I've always wanted to head into the bush with a quad, some friends
and just the necessary living items as well as a rifle (for rabbits) and a
fishing rod. It almost sounds like heaven.
-Our club usually has at least one camping outing on our land per year. We
usually have around 13-14 atvs up there when we do so we spread out the load
a lot. Also taking into consideration that we park only a few miles from the
camping areas on our land aids in taking multiple trips up to drop off
supplies also. While you are looking into extra racks and such you can also
look into one of the atv trailers that are out. They will run you about the
same as the front and rear rack extenders both together and will same you
from having your quad overloaded with gear.
