Question:
Well the wife and I are looking at purchasing a trailer for camping. We
were tent campers for years but I'll be 45 soon and can't seem to get
upright after laying on the ground all night (ahh age). We also got kind of
soured on tent camping as well due to the increasing amount of other campers
that thought it was a God given right to yell, scream, swear and have drag
races at 4 in the morning.
We have gone to the rv show here in Cleveland, Ohio for numerous years and
have always talked about the "someday". If we do purchase one it will be
the Keystone 20' Cougar model, all in all a nice set up. I've read a few
posts about the Keystone so far, any others would be greatly appreciated.
Before we plunk down a lot of cash a little voice in the back of my head
keeps saying "yes but how much will you really use it, will you get your
money out of it?" Kind of a loaded question but given that you really only
have a small bit of Friday night, all day Saturday and packing it back up on
Sunday is it more trouble than it's worth. I guess you can get a lot of
Holiday Inn for the price of a camper but I really enjoy camping when the
neighbors are thoughtful.
Answer:
My wife and I tent camped for 25 years before buying a used Layton. We
love it. We keep everything we need in the trailer and just replenish what we
use. We find it is not hard to go on consecutive weekends for several weeks in
a row.
On the other hand, if you are trying to justify trailer camping with
economics, you are going to have a hard time. When you factor in the tow
vehicle, trailer, insurance, upkeep and the fun but expensive trips to Camping
World and couple this with the $25 to $50 a night charged by first class
campgrounds, you can spend a lot of nights in a Ma & Pa Motel. The
justification has to come from the beautiful spots you will park, the nice
people you will meet and the camping experience.
