Question:
For a long trip in the TJ, I pull a 4 x 6 utility trailer with a sealed
wooden box. I put new weather-stripping on the box every year. The metal
ice chest straps to the top, and we carry a smaller cold drink cooler in the
cab with us. For a week or longer trip:
Coleman propane stove, folding oven, lantern, tent heater
12x18 Hillary tent; queen size air mattress, sleeping bags
folding chairs, folding table, tarps, folding stove stand
kitchen box , fishing tackle, etc.
Traveling with a wife and a small child you will enjoy the roomier
accommodations. I have made the trip to the San Juan range in Colorado with
this get up and a canoe on top of the Jeep.
For shorter trips, a hitch haul with one ice chest, dome tent, therma rest
pads, mummy bags.
Answer:
I just ordered a utility trailer for camping with kids and a TJ. If that
back seat is in there, there's just no room...
I think a small trailer is the way to go, and you can get a good 4x4 or
4x6 utility trailer for $500 or less. It's only costing me $650 to have
one built to my specs, with the same wheelbase as the jeep and made so it
sits level with the TJ when hooked up... and bigger tires than a utility
trailer would usually have... and a torsion axle for maximum
clearance... green like my Jeep...
I plan to build up a 4x4 box on it (it's 4x6) and bolt a 4x2 metal truck
box type thing up front. So then I got 4x4xhowever high I make it to
store camping gear and a relatively secure, waterproof 4x2x2 area for
tools, guns, etc...
