Question:
Many years ago there were lots of places that rented travel trailers, but
they are hard to find now. The problem is that very few people have
vehicles now that can tow a trailer. Even people who do have the right
kind of vehicle will need to spend several hundred dollars getting the
right kind of hitch, electrical connections, and brake controllers.
All this severly reduces the market for potential customers.
Motorhome rentals on the other hand is a booming business.
There also is a growing business in "in place" trailer rentals.
These companies tow the trailer to the campground that you specify and
have it in place before you arrive. These companies are usually located
near popular vacation locations. There are several of these companies
located in Bishop, CA which is very near many popular campgrounds in the
Eastern Sierra. Obviously, this is a more expensive way to go, but it is
still cheaper than renting a cabin, and you don't have to worry about
towing anything.
Answer:
-My wife and I are thinking about purchasing a travel trailer in a
couple of years. I grew up for several months one summer (among
others) in a 26' travel trailer, but my wife isn't as sure this is
the thing for her.
So, the question is, is it possible to rent a travel trailer for a
long weekend or week to "try it out"? I've got a suitable tow
vehicle--K2500 Suburban--but I haven't ever seen any advertisements
for folks renting this type of RV.
-Before my husband & I acquired our travel trailer, we tried unsucessfully
to rent one. It definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. I like
the way we have more living space in a travel trailer than we would in the
same size 5th Wheel. However, a travel trailer is best for "weekend"
camping and not the easiest mode of cross-country travel, especially when
dealing with the elements. Nonetheless, my "plus" list is longer than my
"minus" list.
