Question:
We're going to spend a week in Tampa in June staying with friends. We
want to head down to Key West for a couple of days. Instead of staying
in a hotel I thought it would be cool to rental a travel trailer to pull
behind my Silverado and camp at the Keys. Anyone ever do anything
similar?
Answer:
-trailer rentals as you describe is not readily available. On the
other hand, class C (mini motorhomes mounted on cut-a-way vans) are. I
suggest you get your friends in Tampa to check on renting one of these.
-My brother rented one from a place in KY last year and brought it down this
way, met up with us, then we took our campers to Cherokee. Had a lot of fun
but the camper he rented wasn't in the best shape. It had taken a bit of a
beating and he told me that it was the best one the place had. I apologize
but I don't remember what he paid for it. Either way, we had a good time.
I don't know how available trailer rentals are but motorhome rentals are
very popular, although probably more expensive. We have a 5th wheel and use
it probably twice a month. Love it!
Just remember to check your weights and your tow rating of the truck before
renting a camper. You don't want something too heavy and I would definately
recommend using an equalizing hitch. It keeps the trailer more steady and
lowers the possibility of sway. I don't know how much experience you have
towing large trailers but take it slow and get good towing mirrors that
don't shake a lot. I know they're hard to find but there are places that
have them. I know wal-mart sells a set that attaches to your normal mirrors
via rubber straps. They shake a little bit, but they're about the best I've
seen. I have permanent towing mirrors now and they're wonderful, but
they're not cheap.
