Question:
We are considering purchasing a pop-up tent trailer. This will be our first
trailer ever. After looking around locally, we have found the Coleman Grand
Tour Series as the ones we are most interested in. We liked the Bayside model
which has no shower/toilet. Is a shower/toilet a wise investment on a pop-up?
What are the most important options when buying a trailer. What are the
problems to owning a pop-up? Are there maintenance issues? How long do they
last? Any information would be helpful in making our decision. If anyone
actuallly owns one of these trailers we would appreciate an e-mail so we could
talk more directly.
Answer:
If it is raining when you strike camp, when you get home you have to set
them up to let them dry out. If you don't, the canvas will grow mold.
A problem I have is that I'm wider than the doorway, so I have to enter
and leave moving sideways. My husband took the metal step off because
the trailer would sway badly whenever one of us stepped on it. We now
use a wood stepstool. We've also taken out the sink (an unfixable
leak), the propane stove (we use an electric buffet range) and the
icebox (not only was it in a stupid location, but the door warped after
6 months; we now have a compact refrigerator).
As for maintance, you have to lube the wheels every X number of miles.
The dealer told us to try to not touch the canvas inside as our body oil
would make water wick through from the outside.
