Question:
I want to get a fifth wheel camper for my long box chevy pickup......what
would be come good choices? I am from Minn and need to have some fun with
the family. etc.
Answer:
-It is impossible to answer such a broad question. I would suggest
that you monitor rec.outdoors.rv-travel newsgroup for awhile.
You need to know the tow rating of your truck also. Then go
to RV shows and look for a trailer you may like in your price
and towing range. Also, look at the RV Consumer Group
http://www.rv.org for their rating book. You may find a copy
in your local public library. It may seem like a lot of money
to join, but it is cheap compared to buying a cheaply make
'lemon' of a trailer.
-There are a lot of 5th wheels available. The one for you depends on many
things. How many must it have beds for? Do you want a slide out room? Do you
want air conditioning? Do you need a stand-up bedroom? What appliances do you
want?
Concerning your truck. What is it's towing capacity (Combined vehicle weight
rating CVWR)? This is determined by the manufacturer. What engine,
transmission and rear-end ratio will be big factors in this. You should never
exceed the ratings put out by the manufacturer.
Try to find a 5th wheel with 16" wheels and at least 12X2 brakes. Look for
good cross ventilation. There are many other factors but this gives you
something to think about.
