Question:
My wife, my son and
I are seriously considering buying a Viking Fold-Down Camping Trailer (The
Legend 2480ST model). I think this is something that we would enjoy using
instead of paying $125.00 per night at the hotels we stay at when traveling
and to use for the 2-week camping trip we take every summer.
Our main concern is our ~safety~. Do most of the RV Camp Grounds have
security? What do all of you do after you have everything all setup and
then decide to go out for dinner or go grocery shopping? Do you just leave
your trailer setup and hope that nobody breaks in a steals everything or do
you actually take the time to break everything down and take the trailer
with you everywhere you go? And I'm wondering if we'll be able to relax at
night while sleeping or be up all night wondering if someone's gonna steal
our stuff.
Another question I have is: What does it cost to stay overnight in one of
these RV Camp Grounds -- the ones with electricity, water, showers, etc.?
I'm sure that it varies from state-to-state, and area-to-area, but a rough
ballpark figure would be great for CT, NY, NJ, and ME.
Answer:
-My wife & I have been camping for 19 years. We have camped in RV
resorts, in developed campgrounds, and in "primitive" campgrounds. We
have camped from Maine to Virginia and in the Canadian maritimes. We
have never experienced anything that we thought compromised our
personal safety.
As far as property, we have never had anything stolen from our
campsite. However, we never leave valuables in the camper, and make
sure items that migth be easy to walk off with are out of sight.

We are planning on traveling through 24 states from Massachusetts to
California this summer, and the most we have run into was about $40 a
night. It is usually less than $30 for five people.
-I'm not as well seasoned as many of the people on this group. But I've
found there is sort of a "Neighborhood Watch" among campers. When you are
setting up your tent (I'm often alone) someone will come help you set up.
People are generally friendly and say hello. Seems like people keep an eye
on your camp with you're gone for a hike or to the showers.
As others have said, don't leave the stuff that is easy to walk away with
out for someone to easily grab, but I've never really worried about safety
or security.
I guess if someone steals something , they need it much worse than I do.
