Question:
Up till now I've camped in a frame tent. I'm now looking to upgrade to a
folding camper (Conway Cruiser). I have questions coming out of my ears so
if anyone has any advice - please fire away.
We've decided to buy new rather than second hand because the new units have
sprung mattresses on the beds rather than foam.
Anyone have any idea how much it is likely to cost to insure (list price is
about £6600)?
Would we need extension mirrors since the trailer is wider than the car?
If you have the awning with a folding camper do sites count that as part of
the unit or charge extra as they do for the caravan awnings?
Do folding campers need to be checked over professionally/serviced or
whatever on a regular basis?

Answer: Folding Campers are brilliant whatever brand you buy. Look at Pennine
http://www.pennine-campers.demon.co.uk/index.htm and Dandy
http://www.dandycaravans.com/ too if you haven't already.
Question: We've decided to buy new rather than second hand because the new units

Answer: You could always ask Conyway to sell you a new mattress to go with an older
camper and save a few quid!. Also, make sure they are 2000 spec or an
earlier year in which case you might find them on a 2nnd hand camper.
Question: Anyone have any idea how much it is likely to cost to insure (list price

Answer: Look at Hill House Hammond http://www.hhh.co.uk but don't forget some
contents cover too. My £4000 Insurance costs £77 and when I had a claim last
year the Cirencester Branch were very helpful.
Question: Would we need extension mirrors since the trailer is wider than the car?
Answer: Yes
Question: If you have the awning with a folding camper do sites count that as part
of
the unit or charge extra as they do for the caravan awnings?
Answer: True when booked in as a Caravan but some sites charge as for Trailer Tents
and include the awning - I have yet to find a site that charges for a
Folding Camper as such.
Question: Do folding campers need to be checked over professionally/serviced or
whatever on a regular basis?
Answer: Yes, I have an Annual Service on my Dandy Camper but a newer unit may need
less frequent attention in the early years. There are Gas Appliances
(Fridge, Cooker, Heater), as well as other safety things like Brakes, Lights
and Electrical Wiring to look after. About £125 should cover it.
Question: Anyone know of somewhere that hires these units out (preferably in the
South
East so we could try it out before buying)
Answer: Not sure - ring some dealers and ask - there must be at least one near a
campsite or with sufficient grounds for a nights sleep who could help you.
