Question:
We're planning a trip from Vancouver towards Alaska and back coming summer.
We're thinking about traveling with a camper instead of the tenting that
we're used to. But a few questions stil linger. For instance: Is driving a
camper a problem on the gravel roads up north? Are there any restrictions or
extra fees driving a BC camper up to Alaska? Wich type of camper
(truck/camper) would be the cheapest/smallest?
Answer:
-There are very few unpaved roads going to Alaska. Only about 20% of the Cassiar
Highway is unpaved. All of the Alaska Highway is paved and in good condition.
All of the major roads in Alaska are paved ( excluding the Dalton Highway,
going to Deadhorse and the Taylor Highway going to Chicken). Construction areas
that pop up every spring can be not so good. There are no restrictions or fees.
-I've taken my truck with camper on many gravel roads, but never a long trip
such as going to Alaska. Try posting in the slide-in forum over at
www.irv2.com . I would think a camper would be better than a travel trailer
because the camper wouldn't get damaged from rocks thrown off the back
tires.
