Question:
In my quest for more carrying capacity for my TJ, I googled "off-road
trailer" and came up with DOZENS of different manufacturers. The problem is,
virtually all of them were either Aussie or African-made. Some were really
impressive...kitchens, freezers, water and fuel supplies, and tents all in a
relatively compact, lightweight and sturdy package. Why aren't these types
of trailers more common in the US? Is it because of all the motels and
motorhomes?
Anyway...just wondering if anyone sells similar trailers here in the US.
I've looked at Tentrax, Rubicon, and a couple of others offered in the US,
and would rather have something else. I like to get dimensions and detailed
pic's from some of these bush trailers and build my own...any Aussies out
there want to help me out?
Answer:
-I think they are so common in OZ and Africa, and so rare here, because
we have such a major network of established campgrounds that are
accessible by decent, maintained roads. That is simply not the case
when you get away from major arterials in these other countries. I do
wish we had more choices here - I think they are cool. I visited
Australia last year and was amazed at all the capable off-road rigs.
And Jeeps were _very_ rare, but every third vehicle was a Land Cruiser
once you got out into the country side.
-I'm to try and see if I can have a trailer built. There are several major
trailer manufacturers in my area. I have been considering approaching one of
them to built an offroad specific trailer similar to the military M416 1/4
ton "jeep trailer." I'm guessing that they might do it for less if I bought
several. If anyone is interested in a group buy, I'm willing to see if it
can be done. I'll post more later and take suggestions on how it should be
equipped.
