Question:
I'd like recommendations about pop-up pickup campers: e.g., Four-Wheel,
Alaskan, etc.
List brands, pros/cons, whatever enters your head, preferably based on
personal experience. I've decided that a camper shell is no longer enough,
and I want a real camper that I can cook in and sleep in in a real bed, but I
don't want a big, top-heavy, monster that makes my truck sway as I go down
the road and is unweildly on bumpy dirt roads.
Answer:
-I owned a ShadowCruiser awhile back and was very pleased with it. One
tip- check out the door. Some attempt to make a hard top to the door by
having a folding panel or some such. This is lousy! Lots of trouble
with leaks and durability. The ShadowCruiser had a door the same height
as the unit collapsed. No extra panels to fool with. You do have to
duck somewhat but in practice this isn't a problem since you are
changing "elevation" on your way in or out. I now have a Jayco..a huge
unit with extended cabover. I like it too, but for as little as my old
ShadowCruiser was worth I wish I'd kept it! Sometimes for a day trip
that unit would have been nice with a fridge and potty!
-You didn't mention what size of a pop-up truck camper your
interseted in but I'm getting ready to sell my Shadow Cruiser 7'
(model 701) unit sometime this week. It is a 1994 model that was
purchased new in '95 and was used only one summer season until I
purchased a much larger truck that the current camper will not fit
into. It is built for all import trucks excluding the Toyota T100
and mainly for Chevy S10, Ford Ranger and I think (not sure) Dodge
Dakota. For more info E-mail me
