Question:
Switching from a Class-A to a slide in camper. I have concerns with my
'04 Dodge 2500, 4 door, short box and purchasing a slide in camper
unit. I have read several articles on figuring the proper weight for
this combo, but I have come away bewildered. Is there anyone willing
to help me figure out what will safely work for me
Answer:
-Weigh your truck with you and all passengers. Subtract that from the
GVWR, gross vehicle weight rating, and that will tell you how much
camper you can carry. Just remember you need to allow for food,
clothes, water, propane and any other gear you might want to carry.
Since you have the short bed, you will be kind of restricted.
-And look inside the glove box of the truck. There should be a label
stating the maximum slide in camper weight for that vehicle. Then
reduce that accordingly.
-Your cargo weight is 2,563, if the truck scales out over 9,000# you will
be over weight. This is your payload(2,563) + curb weight(6437) =
GVWR(9,000). This includes all the kids wife and dog as well as the cat
and what ever other varmint with every bodys food, including your beer.
Provided it has the diesel engine, and is otherwise like mine.
