Small camper trailers

Question:
When you buy anything used, it all depends on age and condition... I knew somebody that got a 15' trailer for 100 bucks once, try and guess the condition. You'll just have to look around, look on traderonline.com, the newspaper.. etc. You can probably get something decent for a couple of thousand. Most any trailer, pop-up, whatever.. will be probably more than 5000 new, they seem to cost that much for the stuff, the wheels, stove, etc, etc., no matter what kind of configuration it is. THen add on for extras, A/C, shower, TV or microwave. Pop ups are basically a tent pitched on a hard floor with wheels, and all the kitchen gear. No protection from weather, and a quick slash and anybody can get inside. A friend of mine was looking into some different ways of traveling.. he wanted to make an RV, mounting a popup on the back of a flatbed truck. I dont know about that, but it got me to thinking... it kind of depends on your priorities. The two main things are sleeping and eating... there's a web page about an older kind of trailer that supplied only that, called a teardrop trailer. The web page is called lonely teardrop, or something like that. THe trailer was a streamlined homemade bed on wheels, witha pop-up kitchen at the rear of the trailer, which was accessed from outside, standing up. You had a hard shell to camp inside, and then you cooked outside, but all the gear was conveniently stowed, so you just flipped open the lid and got started cooking. No room to sit and watch TV, no shower, etc.

Answer:
-The most basic pop-up is a tent on wheels with indoor cooking and eating and softer beds. They are usually not self contained - some have a porta-potti with a shower curtin around it. Older units were made of canvas - newer ones have vinyl tops. Some have hard sides in the trailer box area most do not. I have seen used prices from 500 to 2,000 depending on age and condition. Coleman and Jayco have been at this business for years are are probably the two best brands to look for. Some variations on the pop-up are the A-liner and Chalet which are hard sided units that fold up into an "A" shape - hence the names. Sunlite also has a unit called the "Discovery" which is half hard side half tent.

-Suggest you look for a good used 18-20ft Hi-Lo or Towlite trailer. It will have everything you need and you will be able to tow it with your van. Checkout their website at/ Hilotrailers.com
