Question:
OK, I have the tow vehicle now I need a travel trailer. Any
suggestions on what to look for? I found a used 2005 Alpenlite Aspen
Travel Trailer (not a 5th wheel). It looks very clean, well built and
it meets our needs. We are thinking of making an offer but I can
figure out where to find the blue book data, of if there even is that
kind of thing for RV's and trailers.
Has anybody had good or bad experieinces with used TT's? It is at a
dealer who I think is reputable. My neighbor is an RV god and he said
the guy is good.
Answer:
-Take you neighbor down and inspect the trailer with just you and your
neighbor doing the inspecting. He knows what to look for and point out
what is not up to par. On the other hand, the RV salesman is doing
everything to make a sale. I hope you see the difference!! Used RVs
depend almost 100% on how the previous owner MAINTAINED them. Your
neighbor can tell you about maintenance, especially keeping all seams
sealed from water leaks - a killer in RVs.
-We had a 29' TT before we moved to 5th wheel. check ceilings for water
spots, GO ON OR GET A LOOK AT THE ROOF for cracks bubbles, rust etc.
Turn on the A/C if you can, look under all mattreses, drawers, and
cabinets for mouse, ratt droppings and chewings.
Check your water pumps, and the plug on the outside, most likely it was
a 30 amp, is the plug itself burned and melted? Make sure the Water
heater, and fridge both work on propane. If it has a slide out, slide it
out, then go outside and check it out, top and bottom. Make sure the
jacks work. If you see any screws missing or fins missing from any part
of the A/C question them about the repairs, you can count on 1000.00 for
a new A/C, or about that. Climb underneath look for spots that could
leak in your water tanks, and excessive RUST, check wheel bearings for
grease. If it has an Awning, Pull it out, those are expensive too.
Big thing is appliances and the ROOF. Water damage to me means a no sale.
