Question:
I need some advise on how to check out a used camper I will be buying
I was recently released from my job of 30 years and rather than get upset
I've decided to buy a camper and see the USA with my wife and two young
children.so cost is a concern
I'm looking at buying a used camper to tow with my expedition that has a max
towing weight of 6000 Lbs.
I'm looking on Ebay and Craigslist for a private sale and have a few I hope
to see this weekend. most of which are too far away to have it taken to a
dealer to check it outy
My problem is I have no idea what to look for other that the obvious
condition of the interior.
Are there any simple ways to evaluate the condition of a unit that I should
be aware of ? and if so what should I look for
Answer:
If it were me, the first thing I would look for is water leaks from
the ceiling. Look for spots on the ceiling, around any windows, vents,
and the floor near any slide-outs. Then water leaks around the toilet,
tub, shower. Run the water in all the sinks and check for leaks. Pull
out the awning and check it.
Make sure water tanks don't leak. Check all mechanical appliances.
Brakes, tires, lights and etc. also.
Tires, brakes, wiring and such can be fixed reasonably cheap compared
to water leaks.
Don't be afraid to crawl under it and look for sagging floor/
insulation, wiring hanging, and other unusual stuff. Most new campers/
MH have some little defect or two.
This will take some time, but well worth it. Allow a few hours to
check it all out. The refrigerator takes a couple hours just to get
cold. Take a thermometer with you.
