Question:
My wife and I have finally agreed that it's time to upgrade from tent
camping to a pop-up. I've been "listening" to this NG for a while, and
there seems to be quite a bit of knowledgable and experienced pop-up owners
out there. Since we probably will be buying used vs. new, what area's of
the pop-up should I inspect or concentrate on? What questions should I ask
the seller? Are there any model years for manufacturers I should avoid?
Answer:
If you have been "listening" for a while, you should already know a
bit or two. Suggest you visit a number of dealers and look at their
used models to get a feel for what you like and dislike. Take note of
prices and keep a log. Also get the NADA value and track ads in the
paper. From this you should begin to get a sense of what the fair
market value is. Keep looking until the right one comes along and
them buy. My gut hunch is you will find a better unit ftom a private
party, but not always.
As far as manufactures go.....hey you know what people here will tell
you that their's is the best....so I am not going to touch that one.
As far as model years, I have never heard of a bad model year, other
than the Colemans as it pertains to the roof sag.
Once you find one you like, do a walk around, open and close doors &
drawers, test all appliances.
Questions...why selling? What repairs have you had done? What
problems have you had and are any unresolved? Where was work done?
What maintenance was done (i.e., wheel bearings etc.)
Last of all, make darn sure your vehicle can tow the unit you like.
